5A’s was organized January 1959 by Helen and Ray Gibson; The shelter opened early in the spring of the same year. Our Mission is to provide shelter and care for the homeless and abandoned animals of the area. We are a no-kill shelter that provides a haven for these animals until they are adopted to qualified homes. We also stress the abhorrence of cruelty to all animals. 5A’s is located at 4530 North Alby (behind Roberts Ford). After nearly 50 years at our old location next to the Target Store in Alton we were presented with the opportunity to sell our old worn out location and move to a lovely 3 acre site and build a new Shelter very close by. We moved to our present location in September 2006. We were able to use the money from our old Shelter to build a home for all of the animals that we normally house! After over 50 years in the business of saving and placing abused and abandoned animals ( over the years the number would exceed 30,000); we can always use more donations as this is a very expensive endeavor and we would like to build on with the addition of a Isolation wing for the sick and to help keep our own animals from exposure to new germs, an area for cats to romp and play and a special puppy and birthing wing. Our biggest dream is a spay and neuter clinic. We have the room we just need the funds !!!!!!!!!!
1) Encourages spay and neutering of animals. A good rapport exists between 5A’s and local veterinarians. 5A’s is licensed by the Department of Agriculture to operate as an approved animal shelter and receives regular inspections. 5A’s is completely funded through donations. All in kind gifts and contributions are tax-deductible. |
