Many animals are brought to 5A's because they were acquired by families who were unable to assume the responsibilities of owning a pet. Others are the result of unwanted pregnancies. Please understand that the requirements for adoption have been developed not only to protect the adopted pet but also to protect you from the heartache of losing or returning an animal.
REQUIREMENTS FOR BOTH DOGS & CATS: Proper maintenance of the adopted pet includes healthy food, fresh water, and exercise. Vet care is mandatory. All adopted animals have been spayed or neutered at the time of adoption.
REGULATIONS FOR PUPPIES & DOGS: A fenced yard must be provided. The pet should NOT be chained, tied, or allowed to run loose. Dogs who stay outside must have an insulated dog house. Rabies shots are madatory. All puppies & dogs come with the following:
AVID Identification chip - Rabies shots (if 4 months or older)
Bordetella shot - Distemper booster - Worming booster
Spaying or Neutering
FOR DOGS 8 WEEKS to 3 YEARS: $150.00
3 YEARS and OLDER: $75.00
REGULATIONS FOR KITTENS & CATS: Adopted cats and kittens must be kept inside the owner's house and not allowed to run outside. All kittens & cats come with the following:
Distemper booster - Worming booster
FOR CATS 8 WEEKS AND 3 LBS to 3 YEARS: $100.00
3 YEARS and OLDER: $50.00
If the wanted animal has not been spayed or neutered at the time of adoption, the animal will stay in the possession of the shelter while we schedule the procedure with the vet and take it to the vet where the adoptive family can pick up their pet after proper recovery time.
If you can meet the above requirements, congratulations...you're ready to visit the shelter and choose your new "Forever Friend".

Twice a month, on a Saturday,
we hold Adoption Fairs away from
the shelter at two local Riverbend
locations that have been very gen-
erous and supportive throughout
the years of our mission here at 5As. They are Alton Square Mall and the Petco Store. During the Adoption Fairs you can come by
and interact directly with a potential "forever friend" before you actually adopt. Get a good sense of the animals personality as they romp and play to see if they could fit nicely into your family. We're listing below the remaining Adoption Fair dates for this year at each location. Mark your calendar and come out and play!

Organized and planned for in Janaury of 1956, then opened in the early spring of that same year, 5A's animal shelter is a charitable not for profit 501-C-3 organization. Chartered and incorporated by the State of Illinois, an affiliate member of the Illinois Federation of Humane Societies and the American Humane Association located in Denver, Colorado. To make sure all donations to the shelter are used as intended by the donor, we run "Quick Books" computer program for all our daily business accounting. We are audited quarterly by, Croxford Accounting Firm, and then audited yearly by Hughes and Associates Accounting Firm. We strive to be very careful and serious about maintaining all donations and monies recieved for the animals as we are solely supported through donations, grants and funds generated by sales at our Thrift Shop. 5A's is also licensed by the Department of Agriculture to operate as an approved animal shelter and is open to recieve regular inspections.
Our mission is to provide shelter and care for the homeless and abandoned animals of the Riverbend area. We are a NO-KILL shelter that provides a haven for these animals until they are adopted out to qualified homes. We stress the abhorrence of any type of cruelty to all animals. We also encourage spaying and neutering of all animals and provide treatment and care to any sick or injured animal through our excellent rapport with local veterinarians, providing humane euthanasia if the animal is terminal. We give advice on the care of pets, always stressing anti-cruelty by participating in community health and safety programs, including speeches to school children, scout troops and employing a staff of caring individuals.

THE CARE AND
REHABILITATION
OF ANIMALS IN
NEED OF
HOMES
After nearly 50 years at our old location next to the Target Store in Alton, we were presented with the opportunity to sell our old worn out location and move to a new shelter built on a lovely three acre site. We used the money from the sale of our old property to build the new shelter which we moved into in September of 2006. Our new facilities have enabled us to better care for the abused and abandoned animals and continue saving and finding homes for these animals as we have been doing for over 55 years. We would like to expand our facility to include an "isolation" wing to treat animals. A "birthing" room and a spay and neuter clinic are also in our long range plans as is a room for the cats to play and romp in and greet prospective new owners. But we need the funds to make these dreams come true. We rely on your generous donations to continue our present endeavors and to make plans for the future to materialize. The animals thank you for all your donations!
The stories that illustrate WHY we do what we do here at 5As
as told by RIC JUN, Shelter Director
On June 12 of this year, a man brought in an older male dog. He told us he found the dog wandering around and picked him up. We explained to him, that at the time we did not have any openings to bring in any pets. He said he understood and we gave him a listing of the other local shelters with phone numbers to see if he could find an open spot at one of these locations.
The following day, two ladies brought the same dog in. They found him running on Godfrey Road. So our understanding gentleman(?) took the dog and dumped him somewhere it was convenient for him.
As luck would have it, we had an open spot and we were able to take "Tramp" in. He is a poodle mix, approximately 11 years old and as sweet a dog as there ever has been. Tramp would make a wonderful pet for an older couple or a single man. He seems to prefer older men, so Tramp has taken up residence in my office most of the day and in his kennel at night. He has bad teeth and our vets are concerened that putting him under for surgery would cause too much strain on his heart. Recently, Tramp has been diagnosed with renal failure. We have medication we give him on a daily basis and will make him as comfortable as possible.
Waldo is a young kitten who somehow found his way to a family's home. Waldo was half frozen, starved, dehydrated and in very poor condition. The family gave Waldo some much needed milk which was helpful but with his poor condition caused a severe case of diarrhea. Waldo was bought to the shelter on February 28, and we immediately took him to our veterinarian. After several trips and without significant improvement, one of the vets took him home with her to see if she could help him out. During this period, Waldo was able to rid himself of the diarrhea and put on some weight. Waldo is very lovable with children, grown ups, and many of the other animals at the shelter. He loves to talk and tell you his sad story. He continues to grow and become a very good looking male cat. He has filled out so nicely. The vet that saved his life did not recognize him when she was at the shelter.
These stories should touch everyone's heart, one way or another. One of our residents has a future to look forward to and the other we only hope has more time left than we think. Tramp and Waldo deserve good loving homes, so they can be the best companions they are capable of. Both of these animals and all our others thank you for your kindness and generosity over the past decades, and hope for continued help.
Alex and Carter King attend North
Elementary School in Godfrey. They
participated in "The Challenge of the
Classes" to raise funds for the orphaned and abused
animals in the care of 5As Humane Shelter. The children, kindergarten
through 5th grades worked very hard and the winners had thier choice of either and ice cream party or a
pizza party.
Alex and Carter's mother, Jen King gave the donation some additional help by holding a jewelry party and a garage & bake sale. The total donation came to $1,200.00 which will go a long way in the care of the animals until they can be adopted.
The animals of 5As Humane Shelter want to thank all the chuldren and adults involved in this endeavor for without that kind of unselfish help, the shelter can not exist.
We thank them so much for "HELPING US HELP THEM!"
It is a beautiful morning. I am sitting on this large paved lot. I walked down to this building at the end of the drive. There is a large closed gate that I was able to slide through the other end of the drive. I have seen someone stop at the gate and take two large boxes out of thier car and leave them by the gate. One box has an open top, the other is taped shut. in the little while, someone else is pulling into the driveway, only this time opening the gate. When he sees the boxes, he gets out of his car, he does not seem happy about the boxes, but loads them into the car and is coming down the drive. He has not seen me as he backs the car up to the building. He is taking the boxes into the building and then notices me. He is calling me but I am going to run away. I am at the end of the driveway and then cross this large
street with all the cars coming up and down. He has not been able to catch me. I have gone down some roads on the other side of the street. After a few minutes, several cars come out of the drive and are looking for something. They search for a while and then go back. I cross the road and watch the building from the front of the drive. The gate is closed again, but I can easily slip through the small opening. Again someone comes out of the building and is calling me. There is something in a bowl that they set down. When they start coming my way, I turn and run. Another time they pull a van by the gate with the door open and a bowl inside the door. Every time I come down the drive, someone comes and tries to call me. These people seem to really care about getting me, but I cannot let them get too close. MY OWNER LEFT ME HERE THIS MORNING BY THE GATE AND I MUST WAIT HERE UNTIL THEY PICK ME UP!
